Designer develops 'mushroom' home using mycelium: 'To evoke a feeling ...As sustainability efforts ramp up across the globe, innovation is sprouting from the most unexpected places — including fungi. Yes, really. Scientists in the Czech Republic have just unveiled Samorost, the world’s first house insulated with Mycocomposite, a biodegradable material made from the roots of reishi mushrooms.

This forward-thinking building material, developed using 1,800 kg of mushroom root fibres, offers a glimpse into what the homes of the future might look like. The mushroom-based insulation is not only lightweight and naturally fire-resistant, but its environmental impact is twenty times lower than that of conventional insulation materials. That’s a major leap for the planet — and for green building standards.

What Exactly Is Mycocomposite?

Mycocomposite is a bio-based material grown using mycelium — the thread-like roots of fungi that form vast underground networks. In this case, reishi mushrooms were used to form a strong, flexible, and eco-conscious insulating material. It's:

  • Compostable and biodegradable

  • Naturally flame-retardant

  • Lightweight, yet structurally sound

  • Extremely low in embodied carbon

In tests, Mycocomposite meets key European construction standards, making it a promising replacement for petrochemical-based insulation.

The Natural Shift: A Growing Movement

From walls to furniture, interior panels to packaging, mycelium is being trialled for multiple applications. While we’re not quite ready to move into mushroom houses en masse just yet, Samorost’s touring debut across Czech cities is sparking serious excitement. It could be a major step in the EU’s push toward greener building practices and circular design.

At Hillbrush, we’re inspired by this kind of innovation. Our Natural by Hillbrush collection shares the same ethos: thoughtfully designed, sustainably made, and built to last.

A Cheeky Nod to Our Favourite Fungi

We couldn’t talk about mushrooms without giving a shout-out to one of our own favourites: the Natural by Hillbrush Mushroom Brush — affectionately nicknamed our Forager’s Favourite. Whether you're brushing off wild fungi on a woodland walk or prepping mushrooms at home without damaging their delicate surfaces, this plastic-free tool is as practical as it is planet-kind.

Crafted with FSC® certified beechwood and soft natural fibres, it embodies the same values as the mushroom house: durability, sustainability, and a deep respect for nature.

Final Thoughts

While we’re not building mycelium-insulated homes (yet!), we firmly believe that everyday choices add up. Whether that’s choosing a biodegradable bottle brush, a plastic-free duster, or simply keeping your shoes clean with a natural fibre boot brush — small swaps make a big difference.

The future of sustainable living might just be growing under our feet. 🍄
